How importfood.net Trims Price Markups for Consumers via Precision Matching & Cross-Border Joint Procurement

Background: Why Imported Foods Come With Hefty Price Tags

“Expensive” is the first impression Chinese consumers have of imported foods. Yet the high cost stems not from the products themselves, but redundant intermediate links in the supply chain.

Having cultivated deep industry expertise for years, Imported Food Network fully understands the lengthy distribution chain: Manufacturers (Factories) → Importers → Regional Provincial Distributors → City Wholesalers → Distribution Vendors → Supermarkets & Specialty Stores → End Consumers

Every tier adds a profit margin. After layers upon layers of markups, final retail prices can double, triple or even surge higher. ordinary consumers end up footing the bill for all these surcharges.

We have long pondered a key question: Can imported foods stop being unreasonably pricey?

Breakthrough: A Targeted Sourcing Fair, Not a Generic Exhibition

Traditional trade fairs revolve around display, sampling and business card exchanges. Exhibitors set up booths while attendees browse casually; after three bustling days, both sides follow up leads independently. This model creates extremely inefficient alignment between brand owners and channel distributors.

Imported Food Network adopted a completely different approach.

On November 22–23, 2014, we hosted the IF2014 Imported Food (China) Investment & Sourcing Fair in Shantou, Guangdong. This was far more than a showcase — it was a precision business matchmaking event.

Core Distinction

  • Generic Trade Fairs: Open to all visitors; exhibitors wait passively, with deals relying purely on luck.

  • Targeted Sourcing Fair: Pre-vetted buyers only. We exclusively invite professional purchasers with genuine procurement demands and mature channel coverage capabilities. Exhibitors attend not just to build brand image, but to negotiate concrete orders with samples and competitive quotations ready.

Imported Food Network acts not merely as an event organizer, but as a precision matching engine:

  • Pre-event: Based on our proprietary database of buyer demands, we screen and extend targeted invitations to qualified purchasers.

  • During the fair: One-on-one and group matching sessions are arranged for direct face-to-face negotiations between importers and supermarket operators.

  • Post-event: We provide three months of sustained follow-up support to convert tentative intentions into firm orders, eliminating the common pitfall of traditional fairs where business ties fade once the exhibition closes.

Core Objective: Cut Middlemen Margins to Pass Savings to Consumers

The fundamental purpose of this sourcing fair was not simply staging an event, but leveraging bulk collective procurement to slash inflated retail markups.

The fair featured nearly 1,000 varieties of imported food, beverages and alcohol products from 23 countries and regions worldwide. More than 200 supermarket managers and nearly 500 professional purchasers across eastern Guangdong attended.

Consolidating massive aggregated purchasing volumes allows importers to connect with dozens of terminal channels in one go, while supermarkets complete product selection and bulk ordering in a single session. The economies of scale generated by large-volume transactions motivate importers to offer far more favorable pricing. With multi-layer middleman surcharges eliminated, end consumers reap the ultimate benefits.

The true value of this fair lies in proving the viability of the cross-border joint procurement model. Its core mechanism aggregates scattered demand from small and medium distributors into large-scale cross-border bulk orders, which are then precisely matched with qualified, well-resourced importers. Imported Food Network specializes in demand aggregation and matchmaking, while importers handle cross-border trade execution and end-to-end logistics delivery. Each party leverages its strengths to streamline the supply chain and deliver fairer pricing to consumers.

From Sourcing Fairs to Live-Stream E-Commerce: A Forward-Thinking Strategic Layout

Today, live-stream commerce has become a mainstream sales channel for imported food. Platforms such as Tmall and Douyin connect brands with massive consumer audiences via creator live streams and influencer marketing. Top live-stream rooms can hit GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) of tens of millions RMB in a single session. Fresh food e-commerce platforms like Dingdong Maicai also deploy dedicated buying teams to sign direct sourcing deals with overseas brands at the China Import and Export Fair, shortening supply chains.

One fundamental industry challenge remains unchanged: Live streams and e-commerce solve the question of how to sell, while cross-border joint procurement addresses the question of how to source goods. Without cost advantages on the procurement front, frontline sales operations lose competitiveness.

Back in 2014, Imported Food Network anticipated this market trend: as sales channels diversify and consumer traffic fragments, businesses that consolidate purchasing demand and drive down supply chain costs will gain a decisive competitive edge.

Looking back today, the cross-border joint procurement model validated at our sourcing fair delivers targeted solutions to challenges in the e-commerce era:

  • Against brutal price competition in live-stream sales: Joint bulk procurement reduces unit costs via scale economies, equipping streamers with marketable products and healthy profit margins.

  • Against the barriers small and medium distributors face when connecting with overseas manufacturers: Aggregating fragmented demand into large unified orders lets smaller buyers access pricing reserved for exclusive general agents.

  • Against the longstanding industry flaw of cumulative middleman markups: By combining aggregated buyer demand with professional importer execution, joint procurement restores reasonable, transparent pricing for imported food.

Outcomes: A Sourcing Fair Ushered in the Era of Cross-Border Joint Procurement

Korean mineral water brand WATERVIS connected with a Hong Kong distributor at the fair and entered substantive cooperation immediately after the event.

Multiple exhibitors from Japan, Germany, South Korea, Italy and other countries signed preliminary cooperation intentions with Chinese distributors on-site.

Several international brands stepped into the Chinese market for the very first time through this sourcing fair.

More importantly, this event kicked off Imported Food Network’s cross-border joint procurement model. Fundamentally, it was far more than a one-time exhibition; it represented a systematic upgrade of trade models. The event verified the feasibility of the model, and a complete operational mechanism was established to sustain its achievements. Meanwhile, Imported Food Network evolved from an information matching platform into a full-fledged supply chain coordinator.

In 2015, Imported Food Network officially launched its cross-border joint procurement service. In the following years, it became the exclusive China operation service provider for Denmark’s Royal Dansk red tin cookies, Canada’s Gloria’s fruit bars and Vietnam’s Fami soy milk. The model proven at the sourcing fair has been fully implemented and developed into standardized, permanent supply chain capabilities.

Insights from the Case

Imported food should not remain a luxury accessible only to a small group of people. Consumers deserve premium global goods at fair and reasonable prices.

This sourcing fair has proven a core truth from Imported Food Network: when importers engage directly with retail terminals and purchasing demands are consolidated, redundant intermediate links can be cut, and retail prices can return to a reasonable level.

Now that live-stream sales and e-commerce have become mainstream sales channels, cross-border joint procurement enables the platform to build core competitiveness in sourcing — a capability separate from front-end sales. This irreplaceable strength defines the unique value of Imported Food Network.

Evolving from an information platform to a trade matching hub, and further to a supply chain organizer, Imported Food Network has always focused on solving one core problem: how to simplify transactions of imported food, and how to make quality overseas products affordable to ordinary consumers without excessive multi-layer markups.
