At the end of 1997, I joined an internet firm and took charge of overall marketing. Back then in Shantou, barely anyone had heard of the word “website”.
We built an e-commerce platform named Shantou Shopping Network. We finished coding, designed all pages and uploaded all products — yet we faced a huge problem: nobody knew our site existed.
What made things worse was that we were a startup with an extremely tight budget; every penny had to be stretched twice as far. We could not afford any ads at all — TV commercials, newspaper spreads, outdoor billboards were all out of the question.
My boss gave me an ultimatum: come up with a viable marketing solution within seven days. Startups cannot afford to wait.
I brainstormed day and night, mulling ideas over meals, while walking and even in my sleep. We filled and erased whiteboards in the meeting room dozens of times; countless proposals were drafted only to be discarded.
TV ads: far too costly
Newspaper advertorials: slow to deliver results
Flyer distribution: passers-by would toss them away
Offline events: no audience guaranteed
As the deadline drew near, the team sank into low spirits.
The breakthrough came on the final day. I clearly remember picking up my car at the parking lot, when the attendant handed me a standard parking ticket. That small slip of paper sparked a game-changing idea.
It was an ordinary card the size of a business card, wrapped in a thin plastic sleeve. The front printed the property management company’s name, my plate number, entry time, parking regulations and the firm’s official stamp. The back was blank, filled only with generic parking clauses.
I froze holding the ticket — this item was held and seen by every driver every single day.
Every vehicle entering the lot must collect a ticket; every car leaving must hand it back. Drivers could not avoid glancing at the printed content during this exchange, guaranteeing mandatory exposure.
I immediately headed to a print shop to inquire about pricing. The shop owner quoted a low unit cost of a few cents per card for a batch of 10,000 pieces, including paper and plastic lamination.
I ran the numbers:
100,000 parking tickets cost merely a few thousand yuan in total investment
Each ticket was handled by at least two people daily (attendant issuing + attendant collecting)
Coverage included permanent residents and temporary visitors, delivering hundreds of thousands of impressions conservatively
A small investment for mass exposure — exactly the cost-effective marketing strategy a startup needed.
We had our concept, yet one critical piece remained: who would distribute these tickets for us?
I targeted property management divisions under large real estate developers. A single major developer managed dozens of residential compounds and office towers, each equipped with a parking lot. Securing one partnership meant access to dozens of offline touchpoints.
But why would property managers allow us to print ads on their parking tickets?
I prepared sample cards as our core negotiation leverage to demonstrate the win-win setup:
Outer laminated side (front): Reserved fully for the property team, printed with their brand name, plate recording area, entry time slot and parking rules with their official stamp — unchanged from their original tickets.
Inner blank side (back): Reserved exclusively for Shantou Shopping Network’s promotional copy, with zero interference to front-side functionality.
In short, the property company bore zero extra costs and no disruption to daily operations; they simply upgraded their parking tickets for free. There was no reason for them to reject the offer.
I visited leading local real estate developers in Shantou one after another, including Agile Real Estate and CITIC Real Estate.
My negotiation pitch was straightforward and hard to refuse: “Authorize us to supply your parking tickets at our full expense. The front remains your official parking slip, and we take the reverse side for advertising. All parking lots across your residential and office estates will receive brand-new unified tickets, with zero fees on your end.”
Property managers reviewed the samples, saw the front layout untouched and recognized no operational inconvenience or additional expenditure — many signed off on the spot, also appreciating the upgraded texture of the new laminated tickets.
Printing layout strategy: Dual-sided split design; property functional content on one side, our brand advertisement on the reverse, fully independent without conflict.
Coverage scale: Partnerships signed with property arms of multiple local top-tier real estate developers, covering parking lots of dozens of residential communities and office buildings across the city.
Exposure volume: Every driver held and checked the ticket upon entry and exit, reaching hundreds of thousands of local residents and temporary visitors.
Actual business impact: Website traffic surged rapidly after the campaign launch, and Shantou Shopping Network became a hot topic within Shantou’s nascent internet circle.
Total marketing expenditure: Only several thousand yuan.
The priciest marketing asset is creativity, while the cheapest channel is content users cannot avoid seeing — not random leaflets.
Many startups believe brand promotion is impossible without a large marketing budget. This case proves brand building does not rely on widespread mass advertising alone; targeted, unavoidable touchpoints work equally well.
Identify media carriers that users interact with daily, and even a cheap slip of paper costing mere cents can help your brand gain recognition across an entire city.
